Intramural Security Council Simulation at Yale

The Intramural Security Council Simulation at Yale is an annual conference held on Yale campus exclusively for Yale students. It provides an opportunity for Yalies of all levels of debate experience and political knowledge to discuss issues of international concern by simulating debates held in real United Nations committees. IMSCSY also serves as a recruiting conference for Yale's own Model UN Team (MUNTY).

Letter from the Secretary-Generals:

Our VISION for IMSCSY

Our vision for IMSCSY 2008 is to see the spirit and enthusiasm of intramural sports translated to the arena of international debate. As with IMs, everyone should feel welcome to participate and the sole emphasis should not be on MUNTY try-outs. We would like to run this conference because there is a need for opportunity outside of MUNTY — there are many YIRA and non-YIRA members who enjoying participating in Model United Nations, but if they fail to make the team, IMSCSY is their only option. We would therefore like to create an environment of “recreational” Model UN for IMSCSY, without sacrificing the quality of debate at the conference. We should be chosen to serve as Secretaries General because we want to foster a link between the general Yale community and YIRA — if we increase the accessibility of IMSCSY, Kwaku and I truly believe that we could provide a great service to the Yale community.

CHANGES to IMSCSY

The first and foremost thing we want to change about IMSCSY is the feel and spirit of the whole conference. By improving the enthusiasm people have for the conference we will improve the overall quality of the conference. One way we plan to do this is by placing emphasis on intramural competition during the conference. Delegates from the same residential college will be considered as part of the same “delegation”. There will be no pressure on delegates to organize as a delegation before the conference but they will be made aware that their performance at the conference will contribute to the performance of their residential college as a whole. We plan to give out awards at the end of the conference recognizing the best delegation/residential college (both large and small delegation since some res co’s may not have a large representation). Lastly we will find out if the winning residential college can earn points that go toward the residential college social cup instituted last semester by the YCC. In this we way we hope to capitalize on residential college pride and the spirit of IM’s to raise enthusiasm for the conference. Simply put, we want to put the IM back in IMSCSY. We would also like to have more participation from non-MUNTY members of YIRA and we hope to achieve this through effective advertising. To accommodate these changes, the conference would most likely have to be expanded.
