Model United Nations
MUN is a simulation by students of the workings of the real UN. Its aim is to allow students to experience and learn about international diplomacy. Playing the roles of real UN delegates, students represent a variety of views, often ones with which they may not agree. They also have to research their country's positions, adding both to their knowledge of world affairs and to their appreciation of the importance of preparation and critical evaluation. Furthermore, students have the chance to put into action what they read in books. It is here that knowledge turns into understanding, and students gain a greater realization of the issues. They also have to address, debate, and caucus with other students as part of the process. They learn to speak, to listen, and to think. MUN has many facets, as does the real United Nations, and different committees provide a wide range of experiences. Every student should try out as many as they can during their years in MUN. It is this variety that makes MUN an exciting endeavor.
YIRA hosts three on-campus annual Model United Nations Conferences which draw over 2,000 participants every year. The great successes of our conferences are a tribute not only to the extraordinary efforts of the YIRA Secretariat and administrative teams who organize and run the conferences, but also to the exceptional skills and knowledge of the delegates who participate.
In addition to these annual conferences, YIRA runs and managers one of the world's top ranked Model United Nations Teams. The Yale Model United Nations Team (MUNTY) represents Yale University and the Yale International Relations Association at collegiate model United Nations conferences. The team consists of 25-30 members who are selected on competitive bases to compete at national conferences.
