About the Outreach Program
YIRA’s Outreach Program both brings YIRA members into New Haven public schools every week to engage students in debate and discussion on international relations and global affairs as well as bringing New Haven public school students to Yale. The program is run as an after-school, extra-curricular activity, which students attend once a week. Our curriculum includes such topics as the role of the UN, international development and the Middle East, among other contemporary subjects, and important skills, such as public speaking and research techniques are also addressed. Although the Outreach Program debuted just three years ago at the Central High School in Bridgeport, and with the CT Scholars program at Wilbur Cross High School, it has since expanded to new schools with plans for continued growth in the future.. As participants in the Outreach program, students have the opportunity to attend YIRA’s Yale Model United Nations Conference (YMUN) for high school students, where they can apply what they have learned while further honing their speaking skills, and over 30 students from participating New Haven high schools choose to compete every year. To facilitate this, the Outreach team also helps students establish Model UN teams in their schools.
